UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN – ANN ARBOR, MI

The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan expects, pending budgetary authorization, to appoint an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Greek literature to begin fall term 2012. While the field is open, we will prefer candidates who do not duplicate existing strengths of the department (Homer, for example), and we are especially interested in candidates whose research lies in lyric, comedy, Hellenistic poetry, rhetoric, or the novel. The appointment will be entirely in Classical Studies, but we are seeking a candidate who will work closely with colleagues in Comparative Literature and other literature departments. Teaching responsibilities will include sharing in the rotation for Great Books (a large lecture course for first-year students) and the graduate survey in Greek literature. The ability to teach Latin to a high level is also required. Demonstrated skill and experience in teaching, including in lecture courses, is essential.

Ph.D. must be completed by August 2011. Please send a dossier including a letter of application, at least three letters of recommendation, current CV, evidence of teaching experience, a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching goals and experience, and a writing sample to the Greek Search Committee, Department of Classical Studies, University of Michigan, 2160 Angell Hall, 435 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003, or as pdf to lsa-classics-search@umich.edu by September 30, 2011. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University is supportive of the needs of dual career couples. The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity /Affirmative Action employer.
