The University of Virginia Department of Classics announces its search for the next Basil L. Gildersleeve Professor of Classics. The current chairholder, Edward Courtney, will retire at the end of spring semester 2002, but we have been authorized to hire the new colleague as early as the 2001-2002 academic year. Area of research specialization is open: any field of Greek or Roman classical studies except archaeology will be considered. Scholars with a distinguished record of publication and teaching are encouraged to apply; we also welcome nominations. Candidates should send a letter of interest and a curriculum vitae to John F.
