The Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities invites applications for the position of Director. The Director will hold a tenured faculty appointment (Professor or Associate Professor) in an academic department in addition to serving in this 50% administrative position in the Center. The Center has been in operation for approximately ten years. It has recently received a major private gift and a substantial increase in internal funding, giving it an operations budget of about $750K per year. The new director will be expected to design and implement activities integrating research, teaching, and public programs.
The initial appointment is for a five-year term, with the possibility of renewal for a second term. A full-time professional Associate Director oversees the staff and the daily operations of the Center. The Director provides the intellectual leadership for the Center, interacts with the Executive Board, staff, faculty, and students, and coordinates efforts toward public outreach. The Director should hold the Ph.D. degree (or similar professional qualifications) in some field or discipline in the humanities or the arts. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Prospective candidates should submit a letter of application, a current resume or vita, and the names of at least three referees.
