The Department of Classics at Williams College invites applications for appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2020. We are seeking a classicist who has strong preparation in Greek and Latin language and literature, as well as in classical culture. Applicants should be strongly committed to excellent undergraduate teaching and preferably have experience teaching both Greek and Latin. The successful candidate will teach four courses in the first year, and either four or five courses in the second year, depending on the department’s needs. Courses may include introductory and intermediate Latin and Greek, advanced seminars in Latin and/or Greek, and one or more courses in translation that engage with the candidate’s own areas of expertise. Topics might range from literature to material and visual culture, religion, society, and daily life in the ancient world. We welcome applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field, as well as individuals who have experience working effectively with a broadly diverse student population. Applicants are asked in their cover letter to note any specific knowledge, skills, and abilities related to building inclusive learning environments. The successful candidate is expected to have the PhD in hand by September 1, 2020.
