Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Classics for the 2023-2024 academic year. This is an annual appointment with the possibility of renewal. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand but ABDs with significant teaching experience will be considered.

The teaching load for this position is 3-1-3, including a non-traditional January term project of the professor’s own creation. Courses that need to be covered include Latin 101/102, Roman Studies, and general education courses that fulfil the requirements for the Greek and Roman Studies Minor.

Candidates whose teaching and/or research address the relation of traditionally understudied populations, races, religions, or sexualities in the ancient Mediterranean world are especially encouraged to apply, as are those able to teach Greek and/or Roman history and/or contribute one or more of the College’s interdisciplinary programs (Gender and Women’s Studies, Human Rights and Social Conflict, and Urban and Environmental Studies).

Birmingham-Southern College is a residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 800 undergraduate students. BSC is included in Pope’s Colleges that Change Lives and is a sheltering institution for Phi Beta Kappa. The college recently endured a funding crisis and is in the process of rebuilding the faculty and staff.
