Call for Applications: Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Department of Classics at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Classics at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUNL) is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, subject to budgetary approval, to begin January 1, 2024 (negotiable). In order to strengthen a developing focus of the Department’s research and teaching, the ideal candidate’s area of specialization will be any aspect of the reception of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Location: St. John’s, NL, Canada.

About the Academic Unit: The Department of Classics is one of 15 departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest faculty at MUNL. The Department of Classics is a harmonious and friendly group of five full-time faculty members, offering a major, joint major, minor, honours, and joint honours degree in Classics, as well as an MA in Classics. We are currently the home of the Certificate Programme in Ancient Languages and the Certificate Programme in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (together with the Departments of History and of Philosophy). Candidate Profile and Job Description: We seek a scholar with a completed or near-completed PhD (or equivalent) in Classics or in a related field and demonstrable excellence in teaching and research. The applicant will have a track record or show promise of high-quality scholarly research leading to peer-reviewed publications. Classical reception should form a substantial focus of the candidate’s research profile. Teaching responsibilities may include topical courses in Greek and Roman Studies and ancient Greek and Latin language courses at all levels, from introductory to graduate. The candidate will also be invited to develop and teach dedicated courses and graduate seminars on classical reception.
