The Classical Languages and Cultural Activities Coordinator (CLCAC) works for the Classics Department to assist in language teaching and cultural programming. Colorado College, a liberal arts institution that prizes innovative, interdisciplinary and student-focused teaching, operates on the Block Plan, where students take only one seminar-style class at a time for three and a half weeks and there are four such “blocks” per semester. Through teaching semester-long extended-format classes (i.e. weekly adjuncts) in Greek and Latin at various levels, the CLCAC performs a vital function by helping students preserve their language abilities between the blocks that they devote to courses in Latin or Greek. The CLCAC also tutors students enrolled in either language or working on thesis projects in any given block. The CLCAC has an office in the department, lives on campus (in faculty housing), and directs/coordinates cultural programming to help forge community among students interested in Classics (e.g. guest lectures, excursions).
A Master’s degree in Classics or an equivalent field is required; Ph.D. candidates with language teaching experience preferred, and those who already hold a Ph.D. are welcome to apply. Must be independent, adaptable, flexible, able to work with various constituencies, and enthusiastic about classical culture. Financial compensation is comparable to a graduate stipend (earnings are subject to US taxes) and the position also includes furnished housing, health insurance, and roundtrip airfare to/from Colorado Springs. This is a full-time, nine month position that runs from mid-August until mid-May. Teaching duties are roughly the equivalent of three regular courses, so the position allows significant time for research and includes access to all college library services and databases.
Application should include:
1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae and 3) contact information for two references to submit a letter of recommendation. The application site will send emails to references with instructions for electronic submission.
