The Department of History at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invites applications for a full-time, substantiation-track post at the rank of assistant professor in the field of Ancient World History, beginning August 1, 2026. We welcome applicants with specialisations in areas including (but not limited to) ancient Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean world in the period c. 1000 BCE-500 CE. Chronological and thematic specialisations are open. Experience in Digital Humanities (DH) research and teaching methods is desirable but not required. The post is open to all qualified candidates, both local and international.
CUHK is one of Asia’s leading centres of scholarship in World History, a dynamic and growing field within our department. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to high standards in both research and teaching. In addition to delivering the department’s introductory survey course on Ancient World History (HIST2005), a key responsibility will be to further develop the World History curriculum alongside colleagues, creating new courses in line with the candidate’s interests and the department’s needs. The normal teaching load is two courses per term, reduced to one course in the first term of employment. The primary language of instruction in World History is English; knowledge of Chinese is not required.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
i. Have obtained a doctoral degree by August 1, 2026;
ii. Have an active research agenda and clear plans for future publications;
iii. Be committed to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and
iv. Be ready to supervise postgraduate students.
Salary and fringe benefits for the post will be highly competitive. Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially, which, subject to funding, performance and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation (equivalent to U.S. tenure), either when the aggregate service period reaches six years, or sooner upon completing one year’s service, subject to special application and recommendation as appropriate.
