The Department of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Spring Semester, 2026. The successful applicant will teach one section of a combined intermediate/advanced ancient Greek course.
Candidates should be prepared to teach ancient Greek in person at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY twice a week, from 12PM to 1:15PM on Mondays and Wednesdays from January 21st through May 4th, with a final exam sometime between May 5th and 15th (exact date TBA). There are no classes during Vassar's Spring break, March 9th–20th. Poughkeepsie is accessible by commuter train (Metro North Hudson Line) from New York City.
The salary for this position is fixed at $8,000. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Experience teaching ancient Greek to undergraduate students is required. A PhD in Classics or a related discipline is preferred, as is a specialization in Greek literature. The ability to teach Herodotus is preferred.
Applicants should consider the following aspects of this position. First, the level of preparation among the students in this combined-level course will vary greatly. Some students will have taken two semesters of elementary Greek, using the textbook Reading Greek. Others will have taken several semesters of ancient Greek courses beyond the elementary level. Second, few of our Greek students intend to pursue graduate study in Classics. As instructors, we prioritize providing encounters with ancient literature that are rewarding in themselves, free from any obligation to enforce traditional standards of "rigor" or to prepare students for professional research careers. Candidates whose pedagogy shares this orientation to the study of ancient language, and/or who have experience teaching combined-level courses are particularly welcome.
1) Cover letter describing teaching experience, authors the candidate is prepared to teach, and the candidate's approach to the instructional context described above.
2) Curriculum Vitae
3) Unofficial Graduate Transcript
Application materials, and any inquiries, should be sent to Contact Curtis Dozier ([email protected]). Review of applications will begin December 15th and continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
