Society of Classical Studies 156th Annual Meeting

JANUARY 2-5, 2025

PHILADELPHIA

Call for Papers for Panel Sponsored by Hesperides: Classics in the Luso-Hispanic World

Classical Legacies and the Ibero-global World

Organized by Julia Hernandez (New York University), Erika Valdivieso (Yale University), and Adriana Vazquez (UCLA)

Hesperides, a scholarly organization for the study of the legacies of the ancient Mediterranean in Luso-Hispanic contexts, invites proposals for individual papers for its sponsored session at the Society for Classical Studies 2025 meeting in Philadelphia. We welcome submissions that contribute to Hesperides’ core mission: to showcase the breadth of contemporary scholarship that explores the diverse manifestations of classical traditions across and between Iberian contact zones (from the Mediterranean to the Americas, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and beyond).

Interventions that highlight classical legacies that have been overlooked in previous scholarship, such as those created by indigenous, Afrodescendent, and female voices, are especially welcome. We also encourage submissions that explore diverse forms of cultural production, learned and popular, across media and modality, representing non-elite in addition to elite perspectives.

Please send abstracts of no more than 500 words (excluding bibliography) for a 20-minute paper as an email attachment to contact@hesperideslusohispano.org with the title “Classical Legacies and the Ibero-global World” in the subject line by February 26, 2024. Ensure that the abstracts are anonymous and follow the SCS guidelines for individual abstracts (see the SCS Guidelines for Authors of Abstracts). Submissions will be reviewed by two anonymous referees, who will make final selections by the end of March 2024, with enough time that those whose abstracts are not chosen can participate in the individual abstract submission process for the upcoming SCS meeting. The language of the conference is English.
