The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles announces a postdoctoral position for the 2018-19 academic year with the possibility of a one year extension. We are seeking a recent Ph.D. in ethnoarchaeobotany or related field who will be also responsible for the programming and activities of the Ancient agriculture/Ethnoarchaeobotany Laboratory at the Institute. Preference will be given to a candidate conducting research in the Americas, but scholars working in all regions of the world are encouraged to apply. The position will be funded for a period of one year (October 1, 2018 – September 31, 2019) and will include healthcare and other benefits.

Qualifications:

This position is for a recipient of a recent PhD degree, earned between 2013 and 2018 (degree must have been completed by June 30, 2018). Candidates must be in residence at UCLA for the full three academic quarters (Oct 2018 – June 2019), and should not plan for any extended fieldwork away or other absences during this period.

If the successful applicant is a non-US citizen, s/he will need to submit paperwork for a US visa through the Cotsen Institute, and possibly visit a US Embassy or Consulate in country of origin.

  • A cover letter describing their research goals and how they would pursue them in a year at the Cotsen Institute
  • Suggestions on how to involve graduate and undergraduate students as well as volunteers in the setting of the Ancient agriculture/Ethnoarchaeobotany Laboratory (max. 1 page)
  • A current CV
  • Names and contact information for 3 references, and
  • A short proposal for a graduate seminar of a 10-week UCLA quarter (max. 1 page)

Salary:

The level of remuneration is dependent on experience. The current salary range for post- doctoral positions at UCLA is set at $49,188– $59,736 per year. The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology will reimburse up to $5,000 for research expenses incurred for work in the Laboratory and on research during the time of appointment.
