AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME – ROME, ITALY

The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of its six-week Classical Summer School, beginning in summer 2014, for a term of three years (2014-2016). It is customary for the director-designate to shadow the incumbent in the summer preceding (2013).

ORGANIZATION

The American Academy in Rome is a center for independent study, advanced research, and creative work in the fine arts and humanities. Founded in 1894 by architect Charles F. McKim, it is committed to identifying and nurturing the most promising American talent through the annual Rome Prize competition and related residency programs. The Academy also supports a program of lectures, symposia, concerts, Fellows’ performances, and exhibitions both in Rome and the United States. Other summer programs generally include the Classical Summer School, the Summer Program in Archaeology, the Howard Comfort, FAAR ’29, Summer Program in Roman Pottery, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar. All summer programs are supervised by the Andrew W. Mellon Professor-in-Charge of the School of Classical Studies. The Classical Summer School was established in 1923 for high school teachers and graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, but its audience has become more varied over the years, including college teachers and those working in related fields.
