American Academy in Rome - Rome, Italy/New York, NY
The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of the Classical Summer School. Open to high school teachers and serious students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, the Summer School is designed to provide a well-founded understanding of the growth and development of the ancient city of Rome and its immediate environs from the earliest times to the age of Constantine, through a careful study of material remains and literary sources. With the help of an assistant and the Academy staff in Rome and New York, the Director is responsible for the overall operation of the Summer School. The Director, working with a small admissions committee, selects the students in early spring, selects the Assistant Director, prepares the syllabus and arranges for student lodgings. During the six-week term (late June through early August), the Director and Assistant Director meet with students daily for orientation lectures and tours of ancient sites. The Director also must submit an annual report on the program to the Academy. The Director will hold the position for a three-year term, beginning in 2001. Please send a curriculum vitae and three letters of reference by February 15th to: Chairman of the Committee on the School of Classical Studies, American Academy in Rome, 7 East 60 Street, New York, NY 10022-1001.
