THE AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES -- NEW YORK, NY

Director of Fellowship Programs. The mission of the ACLS, founded in 1919, is to advance humanistic studies in all fields of learning in the humanities and related social sciences and to maintain and strengthen relations among national societies devoted to such studies.

ACLS is nationally known and respected as a funder of humanities research through fellowships and grants awarded to individuals and, on occasion, to groups and institutions. The centerpiece of this work is the ACLS Fellowship Program. Over the past 60 years more than 4,000 scholars have held ACLS Fellowships, including many of the leading figures in the humanities today. In 1997, ACLS began a campaign to double its endowment devoted to fellowships. The success of the campaign thus far has increased the Councilîs capacity to support scholarship. In the most recently concluded competition for ACLS Fellowships, more than 120 scholars received awards totaling $4.8 million. The Director of Fellowship Programs will thus be at the center of a major national program, which is in the process of significant reinvigoration.

The Director, under the direction of the President, will organize screening and peer review panels; preside at meetings of the selection panels; conduct research on the distribution of fellowship awards in this and other national fellowship programs; present periodic reports to the ACLS Board of Directors; help develop and fund new programs that fit with the Councilîs mission; and supervise the programsî administration. As a member of the Councilîs relatively small program staff, the Director also will contribute to the general work of ACLS.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a field represented by ACLS, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate interest, experience and effectiveness in academic administration. Broad familiarity with humanities scholarship, while not a necessary qualification, is highly desirable.

Nominations and applications (including a c.v. and the names and addresses of at least three references) should be sent to:
