AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applications and nominations for the position of Head Librarian of the Carl W. Blegen Library, a non-circulating library dedicated to the entire field of classical antiquity, with special emphasis on the language, literature, art, history and archaeology of Greece, with 90,000 volumes, ca. 700 print periodical subscriptions, and ca. 200 electronic subscriptions.

Responsibilities include overseeing research collection; development, management, maintenance and preservation of library resources in both print and electronic formats; guidance and instruction for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in the use of print and electronic materials; budgeting; managing a staff of four FTE's, part time staff, and volunteers; working with colleagues at related research libraries in Greece and abroad; overseeing Library's web presence; thinking strategically to set future directions for the Library, and taking a leadership role in development of digital repository.

Requirements include ALA-accredited MLS; as a minimum BA in classics or classical archaeology, MA or PhD preferred; demonstrated skills and experience in relevant information technology, including its use and management, and possessing a comprehensive understanding of the technology-driven information environment; expertise in one of the disciplines of the Blegen's collection (classics, prehistoric and/or classical archaeology, history of ancient art); understanding of unique needs of a graduate research library and familiarity with current issues in academic librarianship; knowledge of best practices and current trends in managing academic libraries and serving library constituencies; excellent communication, computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Specific experience working with Ex Libris' Aleph highly desirable.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applicants with strengths in teaching and research and with proven experience in Greece for an appointment as Rhys Carpenter Faculty Fellow in Classical Studies. The appointment, which begins July 1, 2008, is for a one- or two-year term and is not renewable. Candidates must have the Ph.D. Preference will be given to those who are within seven years of having received the Ph.D. at the time of appointment and who currently hold a position at a North American university. The area of specialization is open; however, the School does not wish to duplicate, but rather to complement the expertise of its staff. Approximately one-half time during the academic year (September through May) will be available for research, and one half-time will be devoted to teaching and related duties, such as leading field trips, advising and directing students in individual research, and planning the academic program. The Faculty Fellow will be expected to contribute generally to the intellectual life of the School. The applicant should provide a description of the research project which he or she intends to carry out at the School. Directors of the Summer Sessions (Gertrude Smith Professors)

Term: Summer 2009.

Compensation: Stipend commensurate with rank: ranging from $6,500 to $8,000 plus travel and expenses.

Qualifications: Former membership in the School. At least two years' teaching in a post-secondary educational institution. Qualified applicants in all areas of classics, including history, art history, languages, and archaeology, are encouraged to apply. Some knowledge of modern Greek. Duties: To plan the itinerary, in consultation with the staff in Athens, at least six months prior to the session. To collaborate with the Committee on the Summer Sessions in membership selection. To correspond with members concerning travel, equipment, academic requirements, etc. To supervise all aspects of the program in Greece, including teaching, coordinating with on-site expert lecturers, keeping a detailed log of the sessions, and submitting a report to the Director.

POSITION THREE: Research Professorship - Malcolm H. Wiener Visiting Research Professor 2008-2009 at the Wiener Laboratory of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Term: Early September to June 1, to coincide with the American School's academic year. It is expected that the applicant will maintain a physical presence at the Wiener Laboratory.

Compensation: Maximum $35,000 stipend for ten-month project. Waiver of School fees. Housing. Hotel and transportation on all Fall School trips and transportation on all winter Attica excursions. Meals as provided at Loring Hall (no additional meal allowance). Residence permit and office supplies.

Qualifications: Postdoctoral scholars and professionals in fields relevant to the research interests of the Wiener Laboratory of the American School, including: physical anthropology, zooarchaeology, geoarchaeology and environmental sciences.

  1. Cover letter naming the applicant, current research interests, and title and brief description of the proposed research project.
  2. Statement (up to 3,500 words) of the proposed research project to be completed during the term of the professorship, including research goals, explicit methodology to be used and relevant bibliography, materials and collections to be studied, timetable and publication schedule, equipment/resources needed while at the Wiener Laboratory, and the reasons the project should occur in Athens at the Wiener Laboratory.
  3. Copies of permit(s) from relevant authorities and letters of permission from excavation or project directors to study proposed materials.
  4. One page description of proposed Wiener Laboratory contribution to the academic program. Candidates who can enrich the teaching mission of the School, by offering seminars, fieldtrips or other contributions, will be particularly welcome.
  5. Budget. Itemize in as much detail as possible, including living and research expenses.
  6. Curriculum vitae with list of publications.
