The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applications for the position of Managing Editor of the ASCSA Publications Department, located in Princeton, New Jersey. Primary responsibilities include the overall management of the Publications office; scheduling and overseeing the editing and production of at least four monographs a year; working with excavation directors and authors to develop assigned monographs; collaborating with the Editor of Hesperia; overseeing marketing and distribution; coordinating freelance editors and designers; and exploring new avenues for ASCSA publications.

The Managing Editor will also oversee staff in the Publications office; write regularly scheduled performance reviews; create an annual departmental budget; work closely with the chair of the ASCSA's Committee on Publications; and report to the chair of the ASCSA Managing Committee. In addition, the Managing Editor will be expected to assume direct responsibility for the editing and production of at least one monograph a year.

Requirements: Publishing and editorial experience; management skills; background in Classical Archaeology, Classics, Ancient Art, or a related field; familiarity with current developments in electronic publishing.

POSITION ONE: Elizabeth A. Whitehead Visiting Professor. Search reopened.

Term: Early September 2003, to June 1, 2004. Compensation: $18,000, plus round-trip airfare, housing and board at the School.

Qualifications: Managing Committee Member or staff member at a Cooperating Institution; a research project which utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches the academic program of the School.

Duties: None. (Whitehead Professors, however, traditionally make use of the opportunity, which their presence at the School affords to offer a seminar during the winter term on the subject of their expertise or contribute to the academic program in some other significant way.)

POSITION TWO: Assistant/Associate Professor. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applicants with strengths in research and teaching and with proven experience in Greece for an appointment to its teaching staff in Athens. The appointment, which begins July 1, 2004, is for a one- or two-year term and is not renewable. Candidates must have the Ph.D. Preference will be given to those who are within seven years of having received the Ph.D. at the time of appointment and who currently hold a position at a North American University. The area of specialization is open; however, the School does not wish to duplicate, but rather to complement the expertise of its staff. Applicants should be prepared to lead field trips, advise and direct students in individual research, and generally contribute to the intellectual life of the School. Salary commensurate with experience; benefits and housing allowance.

POSITION FIVE: Director of the Gennadius Library. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens invites applications for the position of Director of the Gennadius Library in Athens. The appointment is for a three-year term, which begins July 1, 2004 and ends June 30, 2007, and is renewable. Applicants should be an established scholar in one or more areas of the Gennadeion collection (Greek history, literature and culture). The Director provides leadership in managing, conserving, and building the Library's collections including the Archives; fosters relations with the international scholarly community and local Greek community; and works closely with the School and Blegen Library and Archives to support the School's curriculum and research activities. Important administrative responsibilities of the Director include supervision of the Library staff; oversight of the budgeting process; and cooperation with the Trustees in fundraising efforts. Fluency in Greek and English is advantageous to the position. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience; benefits include TIAA/CREF, group life insurance, health coverage, and housing.
