SCS Sesquicentennial Logo

As of 4:30p.m.on Sunday, January 7th, 2018, just as the last paper was finishing up and flights were leaving Boston, SCS staff and board members began counting down to next year’s meeting. We are looking forward to that meeting not only for its gorgeous location at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, but also because it marks the 150th anniversary of the Society for Classical Studies, founded as the American Philological Association in 1869.

To commemorate such a momentous event, last year the board formed the Sesquicentennial Advisory Committee, chaired by Michele Renee Salzman. The committee began planning special events, projects, and speakers to mark the century and a half of our Society, an organization rich with history, but also ready try new things.

It was with the duality of past and future in mind that the logo you see above was conceived. Upon commissioning local New York City graphic designer Katie Kauffmann, we described our ideal logo as an “image that combined our storied and mature past with our bright and energetic future.” We wanted something that represented not just the Greek and Roman worlds, but also the art forms of the whole Mediterranean region. Mosaics and tiles were the common refrain, and the style nods to our age while simultaneously reflecting a contemporary aesthetic.

After reviewing multiple options, the committee and advisory group agreed upon on the design you see on this page. You’ll see this logo all year as we get ready for the 2019 meeting and for our Sesquicentennial year. Correspondence and mailings that have to do with 2019 will bear this logo, as will online announcements of special events and commemorative merchandise that members can buy in San Diego.

We hope to see a profusion of new ideas, innovative panels, and vigorous discussion in 2019 that celebrate the work of our members who make up - and make strong - this aging but not aged Society.
