Annual Meeting Funding Opportunities, Registration Rates, and Hotels

We have three funding opportunities this year for annual meeting support

  1. We anticipate disbursing over $20,000 in travel stipends this year to students, contingent faculty, and unemployed scholars. For the purpose of the stipends, SCS defines “contingent faculty” broadly as any non-tenure stream faculty member teaching at any level.
  2. In addition, thanks to a grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, we have $12,000 for travel funding for students from groups under-represented in the field of classics and for students committed to promoting the inclusion of under-represented minorities in the field.

Students may apply to both funding programs but will only receive funds from one of the two sources.

  1. As usual, SCS will provide childcare and dependent care subsidies to support the cost of caregiving in DC or at home. As a reminder, the WCC also provides dependent care subsidies to WCC members. Last year, SCS and WCC worked together to fund all requests.

More information, along with application instructions about these funding opportunities, will be available in early September. Deadlines will be in late September, with funding decisions in October, and disbursal of funds in November.

Registration Rates

Each year, AIA and SCS agree on registration rates. This year, there are no changes to the registration categories but we have agreed on a 5% increase in rates in order to support a number of new initiatives, including: an ombudsperson, who will receive complaints of harassment of any type both at and after the meeting; a suitably furnished lactation room and separate quiet room; and a joint AIA-SCS reception for first-time meeting attendees.

Member registration rates will be as follows, with the early registration deadline falling this year on Novmeber 8, 2019:

Early member $179.00

Late member $229.00

Early student $60.00

Late student $83.00

Early contingent faculty / unemployed $86.00

Late contingent faculty / unemployed $107.00

As we explained last year, when we introduced the new category for contingent faculty / unemployed, the definition of “contingent faculty” for this registration category is the result of a negotiation with the AIA. On the registration form it will be noted, “Contingent faculty are professionals in Classics and / or Archaeology or a related field who derive their livelihood from an academic or professional position that does not provide retirement/health benefits. The definition of contingent also applies to those outside the US in part-time positions who are covered by national benefit programs.” Once again, we apologize for the fact that the definition of “contingent” for the purpose of registration is different from the broader definition used for the purpose of the SCS travel stipends. The stipends are a SCS initiative, whereas all matters related to meeting registration are jointly agreed upon with AIA.

Hotels

AIA and SCS have contracted with two hotels for the 2020 meeting. Both are offering a group rate of $159.00 per night (the same rate as in Boston in 2018 and cheaper than San Diego in 2019).

The Marriott Marquis in Washington DC is the conference hotel.

The Renaissance, Washington DC downtown hotel is our overflow hotel. While guest rooms will be available at this hotel, no sessions or events will take place at the Renaissance, which is very close to the Marriott Marquis.

Registration and hotel reservations will open in early September.
