Update on Annual Meeting, Registration, and Hotel Reservations

The draft schedule of SCS sessions is now available. We still need to add information about special events, roundtables, and affiliated group meetings, as well as the full program listing individual speakers. We will be working on this in October. However, we are pleased to announce now that the Plenary Session, including the awards ceremony and Presidential Address, will take place on Thursday January 6, 2022 from 5.30-7.00pm PST. The Presidential Panel, organized by President Shelley P. Haley, will take place on Friday January 7, 2022 from 5.30-7.30pm PST. The panel, "Say Her Name": The Career, Lived Experience, and Interiority of Helen Maria Chesnutt (1880-1969), will feature President Haley and Professors Kelly Dugan, Nicole Adiyenka Spigner, and Tracey Walters.

Last week we finalized with AIA staff all information related to annual meeting registration, and we expect to open registration in approximately three weeks from now, after the online site has been completed and tested. This is obviously much later than usual, but it has simply taken longer than normal to synthesize everything necessary for hybrid meeting registration, especially given public health requirements. As reported last month, we are following all mandates in the city of San Francisco and according to current mandates all onsite registrants will need to show proof of vaccination to pick up registration badges and materials. Further, all onsite attendees will need to wear masks in the hotel. More detailed information will be available once registration opens, and we will update our website with any changes to public health rules between the opening of registration and the date of the conference.

You can expect us to post the links for hotel reservations prior to publication of the registration form. SCS will also release, on or around October 11, information about travel / registration stipends for students and contingent faculty and about childcare / dependent subsidies, with an application deadline of October 31. SCS will notify recipients in early November although funds will not be disbursed until late November.

Although registration is not yet open, you can find rates below. AIA and SCS have increased in-person rates over 2020 and virtual rates over 2021 in order to cover the high technology costs of the hybrid meeting. Onsite registrants will get access to full online platform. There will be no cancellation fees charged this year, and attendees will be able to switch their registration type from in-person to virtual and vice versa after they have registered.

The hotel room rate is $169.99 at the Hilton Union Square. The Parc 55 rate is $159.99 as an early-bird rate and then $169.99. Deadlines for the early-bird hotel rate will be announced soon. Please do not attempt to make hotel reservations until AIA and SCS have published links to reservation websites that are specific to our annual meeting, as you will not receive the preferred rates on the main hotel websites.
