The Geographies of Plato(nism)

In this panel, we welcome abstracts for scholars working both on Plato and geography in the dialogues, including indigenous traditions from outside of Athens, the landscape of Athens, mythological landscapes, natural landscapes and venues such as the Agora or Academy. We also welcome scholars working on later Platonisms, including Egyptian, Babylonian, Jewish Palestinian and Alexandrian traditions, Syrian, Arab, Persian, African and of course Roman forms of Platonism. We welcome questions surrounding the idea of Platonism as a colonialist discourse as well as questions surrounding the idea of Platonism as an indigenous discourse in conversation with majority traditions. Texts such as the Hermetica, the Chaldean Oracles, the Sethian Coptic treatises, Philo’s treatises, The Book of the Law of Nations by Bardaisan, and Arabic/Persian authors such as al-Suhrawardi, al-Sijistani, Rumi, and others are all welcome subjects.

Please send an abstract of 500 words to rappe@umich.edu by March 1st. You may include a separate bibliography or simply use the author date method.

The abstracts will be judged anonymously by a panel of three scholars under a blind review. Hence, in order to facilitate anonymity, please send an abstract with no personal identification together with an email that identities you and your institution.

Thank you very much! We look forward to reading your abstracts.
