Position Summary
The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Classical Studies. This ten-month, renewable, tenure-track appointment begins August 1, 2020. This position is benefits-eligible with the opportunity for two levels of promotion. IUPUI welcomes applications from candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for excellence in both research and teaching, and will be prepared to teach lower- and upper-level courses in Greek and Roman history, culture, and literature, as well as undergraduate Latin. We are particularly interested in candidates who have the ability to extend the interdisciplinary nature of the program by developing and offering cross-listed courses with other departments such as history, anthropology, and/or religious studies, including courses emphasizing digital humanities. Commitment to both in-person and online pedagogy is required. The position carries a 3-2 teaching load. Service expectations include contributing to the department’s efforts on student recruitment, mentoring and retention; and active participation in program coordination and department committees and functions along with other school and/or campus service duties. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Experience in administration, including course and curriculum planning, development, and assessment is desirable.

Basic Qualifications
Required:
• Ph.D. in Classics or a comparable field.
• Evidence of a robust and active research agenda.
• Facility with both in-person and online pedagogy.
• The ability to teach a variety of lower- and upper-level courses in Greek and Roman history, culture, and literature, including courses in IUPUI’s General Education Core curriculum, as well as undergraduate Latin.
Desired:
• Area of expertise is open, but preference will be given to applicants with scholarly areas other than Roman Art and Archaeology, which are already covered by existing faculty, and whose research agenda could lead to interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty from across the campus.
• Ability to extend the interdisciplinary nature of the program by developing and offering cross-listed courses with other departments such as history, anthropology, and/or religious studies, including courses emphasizing digital humanities is desired.
• Ability to demonstrate commitment to diversity. Examples might include, but are not limited to, creating diverse programs or courses, experience with programming that supports positive learning outcomes for underrepresented students, or research or service that demonstrates a commitment to diversity.
• Experience in administration, including course and curriculum planning, development, and assessment is desired.
