POSITION ONE: Assistant to Associate Professor (tenure-track).
Baylor University, Department of Classics, invites applications for Associate or Assistant Professor (tenure track) beginning August 1, 2012. Area of specialization is open. The Classics major at Baylor is philologically based, emphasizing a significant quantity of reading in the primary languages. Thus, serious applicants should have a demonstrable record of outstanding teaching in the languages and show strong scholarly potential. The successful candidate will be expected to participate vigorously in a large department's academic community by intellectually engaging students both in and out of the classroom. POSITION TWO: Chair of Classics
Baylor University, Department of Classics, invites applications for Chair of Classics at the rank of either Associate or Full Professor beginning August 1, 2012. Area of specialization is open.
The new chair will be expected to lead the department in a variety of ways, including recruiting and mentoring junior faculty. He or she must have strong academic credentials, an admirable publication record, and a demonstrable record of outstanding teaching. Inasmuch as Baylor has a very strong philologically-based undergraduate program, the new chair must care deeply for undergraduate education and affirm the value of studying classics in the original languages as well as the importance of liberal arts education; he or she should, at the same time, be able to articulate the importance of graduate education, as the university considers the possibility of a developing a graduate program. He or she must also be able to espouse and aver the major tenets of Baylor's mission statement, and should be in sympathy with the spirit of the Vision 2012 document (http://www.baylor.edu/about/vision/index.php?id=62629).
