(March 2003) Baylor University, Department of Classics invites applications for two one-year appointments at the rank of Lecturer beginning August 2003. The teaching assignment may include instruction in both Latin and Greek at the beginning through advanced levels, as well as energetic involvement in the department's academic community. The person appointed will be expected to engage students actively and intellectually both in and out of the classroom. Applicants should have a demonstrable record of outstanding teaching and show strong scholarly potential. The Classics major at Baylor is philologically based, emphasizing a significant quantity of reading in the primary languages. Established scholar with substantial article and book publication in one or more aspects of Victorian culture, such as the 19th-century quandary of faith and doubt, the debate over the relation of science and religion, the question of culture and anarchy, or other interdisciplinary topics. Robert and/or Elizabeth Barrett Browning scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. The Director is responsible for maintaining and building the collections of the Armstrong Browning Library, a world center for Browning and related Victorian scholarship. He or she must work to enhance the Library's international scholarly profile. The Director serves as the editor of Studies in Browning and His Circle. Further duties may include grantsmanship, public presentations before prospective donors, and hosting scholarly meetings concerned with the Brownings or Victorian culture. Possibility of appointment as the Margaret Root Brown Professor in Robert Browning Studies. Teaching responsibility: one undergraduate or graduate course per semester.
