The Department of Classical Studies invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, specializing in the area of Latin literature, preferably in poetry. Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment (July 1, 2012); teaching experience is a plus.
Candidates must be able to teach both Latin and Greek language and literature from the elementary to the advanced level (the latter courses include both undergraduates and M.A. students). We seek candidates with broad intellectual interests that will foster cooperation with other literature departments and the creation of innovative courses in the area of ancient civilization. Such interests might include, but are not limited to, literary theory, the reception of classical literature, or connections between literature and the wider social and intellectual culture, ancient and modern. The normal teaching load is five courses per year. Candidates may be asked to contribute to the university's Core Literature program, or to the Arts & Sciences Honors Program. Readiness to teach a large lecture course in Classical Mythology is desirable.
