Bowdoin College's Department of Classics invites applications for a three-year replacement position in Classical Archaeology at the Assistant Professor or Instructor level, beginning fall 2008. Ph.D. preferred, but A.B.D. will be considered. A specialization in Classical Archaeology and evidence of strong teaching experience are essential; candidates should also be competent and enthusiastic to teach language courses from the elementary through the advanced undergraduate levels of Greek and/or Latin. Teaching responsibilities include five courses annually, usually three on archaeological topics and two Greek and/or Latin language/literature classes. Of the archaeology courses, one each year will be introductory, Greek and Roman in alternating years, and the others on archaeological subjects of special interest to the candidate and to the department. Applications from candidates with expertise in all areas of Mediterranean archaeology are welcome.

For the 2008-09 academic year; the possibility exists of renewal for a second year, 2009-10. Ph.D. preferred, but ABD considered. A specialization in Greek or Latin language and literature, evidence of strong teaching experience and ability and enthusiasm to teach all levels of Greek and Latin language are essential. Teaching responsibilities include five courses annually, at least one of which will be a course on translation at the introductory level (e.g., classical mythology or Greek or Roman civilization) or on a more advanced level in a subject relating to the successful applicant's area of expertise; the remainder will be in Greek and/or Latin languages and literatures, including one or both semesters of first-year Latin and an advanced seminar in a Latin author or topic. We are especially interested in applicants whose areas of interest can extend our current range of offerings, such as ancient religion, Hellenistic culture, or late antiquity, but all broadly trained classicists are encouraged to apply.
