BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY - WALTHAM, MA
The Department of Classical Studies at Brandeis University invites applications for the teaching of two courses in Classical Art and Archaeology in the Spring term, 2002. Both meet for 80 minutes on Tuesday and Friday. Typical enrollments are from 35-50 students.

The first course, CLAS/FA 134, is a slide lecture survey of the art and archaeology of Ancient Rome which covers the material remains of Rome from the founding of the city to the end of the Empire. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, and various cities in the provinces are also considered in some detail.

The second course, called "Topics in Greek and Roman Art and Archaeology" (CLAS/FA 145), is a more intimate, interactive lecture course, with topics changing every spring from Greek to Roman. A Greek topic is scheduled for the Spring of 2002. A selection of recent course titles for CLAS/FA 145 includes: "Greeks in the Bronze Age," "Gender and Sexuality in Ancient Greek Art," "Greek Cities and Sanctuaries," and "Greek Mythology through Vase Painting." There would be considerable freedom for the successful candidate to teach a Greek topic from his or her expertise. Likewise, the Roman survey course can be tailored to the candidate's concept and expertise.

Candidates should be A.B.D. or hold a Ph.D. in Classics (Latin and Greek languages and literatures), Classical Art and Archaeology, or in Ancient Art History. Candidates with teaching experience and evidence of teaching ability are preferred. Please send your curriculum vitae and a letter of application, which outlines your research interests and publications, teaching experience to date, the names of two referees, and what you would propose as a curriculum for these two courses to: Prof. Leonard Muellner, Chair, Dept. of Classical Studies, M.S. 016, Brandeis University, P.O. Box 9110, Waltham, MA 02454-9110. The deadline for applications is October 15, 2001.

Brandeis University is an Equal Opportunity Emplopyer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
