The Department of Classics at Brock University invites applications for a probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2004. It is subject to budgetary approval.
We seek a scholar with an outstanding record of research specializing in Greek Art/Architecture and Archaeology; eligible sub-fields include Bronze Age through Hellenistic; a theoretical perspective of the past is preferred. Research-productive field experience is required.
Teaching responsibilities will primarily include courses at all levels of Greek art/architecture and archaeology, archaeological theory, practice and method; world prehistory, as well as Latin and/or Greek at the beginning and intermediate levels and an introductory course in Greek Civilisation. The successful candidate will be expected to share responsibility for organizing and teaching the archaeological field school offered during the summer. Demonstrable excellence in teaching and full-time teaching experience is preferred. Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand at the assumption of duties.
The Classics Department has recently expanded to include seven permanent members teaching a variety of courses towards pass and honours degrees in Classical Studies, Classical Languages (Greek and Latin at all levels) and Ancient Art and Archaeology (including the languages). Besides these major programmes, we also offer introductory courses in mythology and in civilization to satisfy a general requirement, and first-year language courses to satisfy a language requirement. The Department traditionally incorporates material culture in its approach to the discipline.
