BROCK UNIVERSITY – ST. CATHARINES, ONTARIO, CANADA (Three Positions)

POSITION ONE: The Department of Classics at Brock University invites applications for a probationary tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin 1 July 2006.

The Department is seeking a person with an outstanding research profile in Classical Languages and Literature, preferably with expertise in Verse or Drama; an interest in literary critical theory would be an asset. The appointee should expect to teach literature in translation courses, Classical languages and mythology, as well as senior and graduate level specialty seminars. Applicants should have a strong teaching record, demonstrable scholarly promise, and a Ph.D. in hand by the appointment date.

Brock Classics is currently a department of 7 permanent faculty and almost 100 majors, teaching a variety of courses towards pass and honours degrees in Classical Studies, Classical Languages, and Ancient Art and Archaeology. Besides these major programmes, we also offer introductory courses in mythology and civilization to satisfy a general requirement, and first year languages to satisfy a language requirement (as well as Greek and Latin at all levels). Starting in 2006, the department will offer an M.A. degree in Classics.

The department will be conducting preliminary interviews at the 2006 annual meetings of the American Philological Association and the Archaeological Institute of America in Montreal.

Review of applications will begin on 30 November 2005 and will continue until the position is filled. The appointee should expect to teach courses in Greek art and archaeology, Classical Civilizations, and senior and graduate level specialty seminars; ability to participate in the Brock Archaeological Practicum or Study Tour Abroad would be an asset. Applicants should have a strong teaching record, demonstrable scholarly promise, and a Ph.D. in hand by the appointment date.
