BROWN UNIVERSITY – PROVIDENCE, RI

The Department of Classics at Brown University has been authorized to announce a search for one-year visiting appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July, 2010. This is a non tenure-track position. Full time teaching load is four courses per academic year. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach one or two courses in ancient Greek and Latin (elementary through beginning graduate level), one large lecture course, and one or more smaller discussion courses in translation, and to participate actively in other departmental activities, including advising. Ph.D. by time of appointment is required. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience. Salary will be dependent upon candidate’s experience and credentials.

The Department of Classics at Brown University has been authorized to announce a search for a Hellenist (open rank). The area of specialization is open, as is the rank (Assistant Professor to Full Professor). The successful candidate will teach Greek language and literature as well as courses in translation; courses in Greek history are also a possibility, depending on the candidate's specialty. Prerequisites for consideration include distinction in scholarship and teaching in any aspect of Greek language, literature, or history.

Advanced Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Archaeology.

Brown University invites applications for an advanced assistant, associate or full professor in the field of Mediterranean or Near Eastern archaeology. Applications are welcome from scholars interested in the complex societies of any part of this broad geographic expanse. Candidates are sought with expertise and interests complementary to current Institute faculty and to Brown resources. Candidates with active fieldwork projects, and strong technical skills, are particularly welcome.

Candidates must have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement and leadership, as well as a proven record of publication, outreach and service commensurate with their career stage. For all ranks, excellence in, and commitment to, undergraduate and graduate teaching are essential. The successful candidate will be expected to make major contributions to the ongoing development of the recently established Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.

POSITION ONE: Visiting Assistant Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art.

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University invites applications for a visiting assistant professor position in the field of Classical archaeology and art, with a preference for candidates with research interests in Classical, Hellenistic or Roman art and architecture. Scholars with museum experience and/or active fieldwork projects are of particular interest. Teaching will be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; interdisciplinary offerings are desirable.

Candidates must be engaged with a promising and developing research program; the Ph.D. must be in hand by July 2010. Excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is essential. The successful candidate will also be expected to take a full part in the academic life and to contribute to the ongoing development of the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World. This will be a one-year position, beginning on July 1, 2010.

POSITION TWO: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Archaeology and the Ancient World.

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow.

While appropriate training in archaeology and/or art history is required, the nature of an applicant's specific research interests, geographical and temporal specializations and areas of expertise is left open, though these should be complementary to the present makeup of the Joukowsky Institute. In addition to pursuing their research, the successful candidate will be expected to teach half time - one course per semester. Teaching will be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; interdisciplinary offerings are desirable. Applicants must normally have received their Ph.D. from an institution other than Brown within the last five years. The successful candidate will be expected to make substantive contributions to the ongoing development of the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, such the organization of reading or working groups, a topical symposium, or any another project intended to foster a stimulating intellectual environment in which to pursue research and to develop new interdisciplinary connections. This will be a one-year position, beginning on July 1, 2010.
