BROWN UNIVERSITY – PROVIDENCE, RI (4 Positions)
POSITION ONE: Position in Near Eastern Archaeology and Art. The Artemis A.W. and Martha Sharp Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track position in the field of Near Eastern archaeology and art. Applications from scholars of any periods and geographic areas within this broad rubric, with the exception of ancient Egypt, are encouraged. Candidates with research interests in complex societies, and with active fieldwork and/or museum experience, are particularly welcome. The appointment may be made at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.

The successful senior candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement and leadership, and a proven record of publication, outreach and service. The successful mid-career candidate will have conducted research already influential in the field, with a commensurate record of publication and scholarly activity. Junior (tenure-track) candidates must be engaged with a promising and developing research program; the Ph.D. must be in hand by August 2007. For all ranks, excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is essential. The successful candidate will also be expected to make major contributions to the ongoing development of the newly established Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and the recently expanded Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies

All candidates should submit a letter of application and a curriculum vitae by December 1st, 2006. Senior applicants (full and associate) should include the names and addresses of five references who would be contacted at the appropriate time by the search committee. Junior (tenure-track) applicants should arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted by the application deadline. Applications received by December 1st, 2006 will receive full consideration, but the search will remain open until the position is closed or filled.

Applications from scholars of any specialization within this field are encouraged, but candidates with research interests in the Archaic-Predynastic periods and ancient Egyptian material culture, as well as those with active fieldwork and/or museum experience, are particularly welcome.

The Ph.D. must be in hand by August 2007; expectations for research productivity and teaching experience will depend on the present rank of the applicant, but excellence or the promise of excellence in both are required. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to make major contributions to the ongoing development of the recently expanded Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies and the newly established Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and three names of references with contact information; recommenders will be contacted by the search committee. POSITION THREE: Das Professor of Sanskrit (Professor of Classics). The Department of Classics at Brown University has been authorized to announce a search for the Das Professor of Sanskrit. The Das Professor will teach Sanskrit language as well as courses in translation, and we anticipate that he or she will establish connections with other colleagues and units at Brown focused on South Asia and on the ancient world. Prerequisites for consideration include distinction in scholarship and teaching in any aspect of Sanskrit language and literature and the cultures of South Asia associated therewith. Candidates should submit a letter of application and curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information of at least five references. Applications should be sent, preferably by November 1, 2006, to: Chair of the Sanskrit Search Committee, Department of Classics, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912, USA. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled or closed. Finalists will be invited to campus for interviews early in 2007. Inquiries may be directed to John_Bodel@brown.edu. Brown University is committed to diversity in its faculty and encourages applications from qualified women and under-represented minority candidates.

POSITION FOUR: Historian of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity. The Department of Classics at Brown University has been authorized to announce an open-rank search for a historian of the exact sciences in antiquity. We seek candidates with a primary focus on one, and ideally on at least two, ancient civilization(s) and who possess scholarly and teaching interests in multiple aspects of those civilizations, such as (but not limited to) ancient astronomy, the physical and mathematical sciences, and the transmission of scientific texts. We anticipate that the successful candidate will establish connections with others at Brown interested in the history of science and in the ancient world. Though the Department of Classics is conducting this search, a focus on Greco-Roman antiquity is not a requirement, and a successful candidate who works primarily in another field or fields will be appointed to the Department most closely aligned with his/her interests. Prerequisites for consideration include evidence of scholarly distinction and excellence in teaching, commensurate with rank. Junior candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2007 and should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and a sample of scholarly writing. Candidates above the junior level should submit a letter of application and curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information of at least five references. Applications should be sent, preferably by November 10, 2006, to: Chair of Exact Sciences Search Committee, Department of Classics, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912, USA. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled or closed. Preliminary interviews will be held, when feasible, at the American Philological Association annual meeting in San Diego (January 4-7, 2007) and/or the American Philosophical Association meeting in Washington, D.C. (December 27-30, 2006). Inquiries may be directed to Mary_Louise_Gill@brown.edu. Brown University is committed to diversity in its faculty and encourages applications from qualified women and under-represented minority candidates.
