1) Bucknell University. The department of classics seeks applications for two one-year leave replacement positions at the rank of visiting assistant professor to begin in late August 2002. Responsibilities will be three courses each semester. Applicants should be broadly trained generalists with a specialization either in Latin language and literature or Greek language and literature. Priority will be given to applicants with the ability to teach courses in mythology, drama, or Roman civilization. Bucknell is a private, highly selective, comprehensive university located in picturesque central Pennsylvania, convenient to Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Ph.D. preferred; ABD will be considered. Undergraduate teaching experience preferred. 2) Christian A. Johnson Chair in Comparative Humanities. Bucknell invites qualified candidates to apply for a new five-year term Chair in its interdisciplinary studies program, Comparative Humanities. This tenure track appointment at the assistant or associate professor level will help lead the program, a new undergraduate major that incorporates and expands upon an established course sequence and program in Western humanities.

The Christian A. Johnson Chair in Comparative Humanities will have a teaching responsibility of two courses per semester, receive a research stipend on an annual basis, and have access to program funding. The successful candidate will possess the Ph.D. and have established a research program in an area of Classical humanism involving texts in Greek and Latin and in a period of study that is self-conscious of Greco-Roman models and ideals. Such a candidate will also be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and an interest in collaborative program development and consensus building. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2001, and continue until the position is filled for an August 2002 start date. The complete application should include a letter explaining the candidate's qualifications and central interests in the position; curriculum vitae; three letters of reference: graduate program transcript; and evidence of teaching ability.
