Department of Comparative World Literature and Classics, Recruitment #: 456. Position: Tenure Track Position-Assistant and/or Associate Professor of Classics, effective Date: August 25, 2008.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. by the time of appointment in Classics, Classical Archaeology, or in a closely related field; specialization in Roman material culture with expertise in Latin language; evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the university/college level, including both undergraduate and graduate courses; evidence of potential for an ongoing, successful record of scholarly research and publication, commensurate with professional level; ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university/college level; experience in teaching courses in all levels of Latin and Greek language, Introduction to Classical Archaeology, Roman Archaeology, Monuments and Topography of Rome, Greek and Roman Mythology; ability to teach in related areas (e.g., Greek Archaeology, Monuments and Topography of Athens, special topics in archaeology such as Etruscan/Roman ceramics, urbanism or nautical archaeology); potential for developing campus-wide interdisciplinary links, e.g. utilization of the campus' archaeometric capabilities including materials characterization (SEM, microprobe, ICP-MS) and luminescence dating.
Duties: Teach three or four courses per semester from lower division to graduate (M.A.) level in Latin and Greek language, Introduction to Classical Archaeology, Roman Archaeology, Monuments and Topography of Rome, Greek Archaeology, Monuments and Topography of Athens, and other courses depending upon the candidate's interests and departmental needs; participate in curriculum development; engage in a systematic program of scholarship resulting in conference presentations and publication; advise and direct student research; provide service to department, college, university, and community committees as appropriate.
Salary Range: commensurate with qualifications and experience.
