CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY – CLEVELAND, OH
The Classics Department of CWRU seeks a specialist in the archaeology of the Roman world for the academic year 2012/13, with the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional one-year periods. The normal teaching load is three courses per semester.
The successful candidate will have the PhD in Classics or at least be a doctoral candidate close to completion (in which case the appointment will be at the rank of Visiting Instructor) with some experience in undergraduate teaching; a record of publishing and/or conference participation is also desirable. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the history, civilization and archaeology of the Roman world, which are cross-listed either with the Departments of History or Art History and Art, as well as introductory and intermediate courses in Latin. Preference will be given to those who have an active field research project and with knowledge of and interest in the evolution of archaeological methodologies and theoretical debates.
The CWRU Classics Department is primarily an undergraduate program, with majors in Classical Philology, Classical Civilization (including concentrations in Archaeology, History and Literature in Translation), and Classical Tradition. Class sizes are small and the students are generally both able and motivated. A Graduate Certificate program (Postbac) is making its way through the approval process, and the Department is closely linked with the World Literature Program, which offers an MA with a concentration in Classics.
The department comprises a highly diverse, interdisciplinary, and international group of colleagues, all of whom maintain significant connections with other areas of the humanities and social sciences, with many holding joint appointments. The department is also committed to maintaining and enhancing existing links with the regional high school and college Classics or Latin programs, with the local archaeological community, and with the Cleveland Museum of Art, which has a very active and recognized research and exhibition program in ancient art and its legacy.
