The Department of the Classics is authorized to make a one-year appointment, with the possibility of a second year, at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 2009. The successful candidate will be expected to bring philological expertise to a department that not only places high emphasis upon the teaching of Greek and Latin, but also plays a major role across the curriculum in courses taught in translation. The department seeks candidates with training and experience in the teaching of Latin and Greek at all levels, preferably with a research interest in Latin literature. An equal commitment to teaching undergraduates and to research is expected. The teaching load is equivalent to five courses per year. Colgate University invites applications for a two-year, two-course/year Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ancient Western Political Philosophy to begin in the fall, 2009, semester. The successful candidate will teach in the appropriate academic department (e.g., the Classics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion) and in Colgate's interdisciplinary core curriculum. The course in the latter includes Homer, the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, Greek philosophy, and a Roman text, all in translation. Acompleted Ph.D. degree is expected by the time the appointment begins. The Mellon fellow will have colleagues and mentors in an academic department and in the interdisciplinary core course and will have research support and faculty development opportunities.
