Department Chair. The Department of Classics at the College of Charleston invites applications for the position of tenured Associate Professor or Professor and Department Chair beginning July 1, 2011.

We seek an enthusiastic teacher-scholar-administrator who has a passion for undergraduate education and is able to provide leadership and vision to a dynamic and growing department of eight faculty members. Ph.D. in Classics required (specialization open) with an interest in contributing to the curriculum in Classical civilization and Latin and Greek languages and to interdisciplinary studies. We are looking for a candidate with excellent oral and written communication skills, outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills, prior administrative experience, demonstrated excellence in language instruction, experience in curriculum and faculty development, and documented evidence of scholarship to warrant appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor.

Primary duties include providing leadership in the department’s development of goals, annual objectives, and curricular and staffing plans, representing the department to external and internal constituencies, conducting annual performance evaluations of faculty and staff, overseeing the department budget, and fostering faculty research and professional development. The normal teaching load for the position is two courses per semester.

Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is the thirteenth oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Located in the downtown historic district, the College of Charleston is a public liberal arts and sciences institution with approximately 10,000 undergraduate students. The Department of Classics, which became a separate department in 2006, teaches more than 1,000 students annually, including 45 majors in Classical Civilization or Classical Languages. Housed in the School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs, the Classics Department also contributes to programs across campus, including the Honors College, First Year Experience Program, Women’s and Gender Studies, Archaeology, History, and Comparative Literature.
