1) One-year Visiting Position in Modern Greek Language and Literature. The Program in Hellenic Studies invites applications for a one-year open rank position in Modern Greek language and literature. Duties will include teaching 4 courses in Modern Greek language, literature, and culture. Candidates in Modern Greek Literature or in Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Byzantine Studies or Classics with a strong Modern Greek component should apply. Candidates in other fields (such as Anthropology, History, Architecture, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies) who can demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching Modern Greek may also apply. Completion of a Ph.D. will be required for appointment at assistant professor or higher rank. Some administrative experience is desirable. 2) Assistant Professorship in Modern Greek Studies. The Program in Hellenic Studies invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in Modern Greek language, literature, and culture. The position is contingent on funding. Appointment will be for one year in the first instance, with renewal expected up to three years or longer, if funding allows. Duties will include teaching 4 courses a year as well as organizing a series of public events. Candidates will be expected to have completed a Ph.D. in Modern Greek Literature or in Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Byzantine Studies or Classics with a strong Modern Greek component. Candidates in other fields (such as Anthropology, History, Architecture, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies) who can demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching Modern Greek may also apply. 3) The Department of Classics at Columbia University has been authorized to make an appointment at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in Fall, 2004, with preference for a specialization in Greek literature. Applicants should be recent recipients of the doctorate or expecting to receive it before next fall. The appointee will be expected to teach a wide range of courses at all linguistic levels (elementary to graduate). The person appointed will also be expected to teach regularly in the Columbia College core curriculum. Scholarly promise and evidence of excellence in teaching will be expected. Columbia University does not have a formal tenure-track system, but in accordance with the department's long-term plan, we anticipate that a tenured position will be available for an outstanding non-tenured Hellenist.
