The Program in Hellenic Studies invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Modern Greek language and culture. Length of service will be one year with the possibility of a one year extension. Duties will include teaching 3 courses in Modern Greek language and culture and 2 courses in Columbia’s undergraduate Core Curriculum. Candidates in Modern Greek Literature or in Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Byzantine Studies or Classics with a strong Modern Greek component are invited to apply. Candidates in other fields (such as Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Political Theory, Architecture, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies) who can demonstrate a proven record of teaching Modern Greek may also apply. Some administrative experience is desirable. Ph.D. required (or Ph.D. close to completion). The Department of Classics at Columbia University has been authorized to make an appointment at the level of tenured associate or full professor with specialization in Greek language and literature. While we welcome enquiries or applications from scholars working in any field of Greek literature, we are particularly interested in scholars working in the areas of Homeric epic, philosophical and historical prose, and post-Classical literature. The person appointed will be expected to teach a wide range of courses at all linguistic levels (undergraduate and graduate), to participate in the Columbia College core curriculum, to take an active role in the supervision of doctoral candidates, and fully to contribute to the governance of the Department. The search will continue until the position is filled.
