CORNELL UNIVERSITY – ITHACA, NY (Fellowship)

2 year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ancient Material Culture

With the sponsorship of the Society for the Humanities, the Department of Classics seeks applicants with active interests in, and new approaches to, integrating texts and material culture in their research and teaching for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship for the academic years 2013-2015. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with skills in epigraphy, papyrology, or the archaeology of texts or marking systems. The appointee will be expected to play an active role in the research life of the department and related fields, as well as collaborating with a wide range of scholars at the Cornell Society for Humanities. Applicants should thus explain how their research draws on multiple methods or sets of evidence and thus how it will contribute to the wider fields of ancient studies and the humanities at Cornell. The appointee will teach two courses each year, on topics designed to foster a multidisciplinary approach: an introductory (‘2000 level’) undergraduate course, such as “Text as object in the ancient world”, and an advanced (‘4000 level’) course also open to graduate students, on a subject related to their research.

The fellowship is open to citizens of any nationality with a PhD awarded after September 2007 and on or before June 30th 2013. (Candidates who do not yet have a PhD should include a letter from their department stating that the degree will be conferred by June 30th 2013.) Applicants should submit a current C.V., a detailed statement of research interests and teaching methods, a writing sample of 20-30 pages, detailed proposals for the two courses mentioned above and three letters of recommendation to: Megan Dirks, Program Administrator, Society for the Humanities, Cornell University, 27 East Avenue, Ithaca, NY 14853, preferably by 2 November 2012 (after which consideration of applications will begin). Inquiries should be addressed to Professor Sturt Manning by email: sm456@cornell.edu.
