Tenure-stream appointment - Lecturer/Assistant Professor - Ancient Philosophy with Greek Language

The Department of Classics at Dalhousie University invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment at the Lecturer/Assistant Professor level effective July 1, 2008 in Ancient Philosophy with Greek language and literature. Successful candidates will possess the philological competence in Greek and Latin required for research and teaching in Ancient Philosophy within a department of Classics and the philosophical skill cross-listing classes in a department of Philosophy demands. In addition a properly qualified candidate will be able to teach the full-year class in Greek language which is part of the normal load attached to this post. Beyond the capacity to teach the Department's introductory, honours, and graduate level classes in Ancient Philosophy, the successful candidate will have sufficient knowledge of the history of Late Ancient and Medieval Philosophy.

Candidates will possess adequate knowledge of the history of Classical Antiquity to participate in introductory interdisciplinary teaching. The preferred research area is text-based studies of Plato and/or Aristotle understood within their cultural context and in relation to their historical hermeneutic.

Qualified applicants will have completed the Ph.D. or have submitted the dissertation and will show competence in teaching, research and publication appropriate to their experience. This position is subject to budgetary approval.
