DURHAM UNIVERSITY – OLD ELVET, DURHAM, UNITED KINGDOM (Two Positions)
Leverhulme Chair/Readership in Greek Cultural History (ref: 1085), and Chair in Latin and/or Roman Cultural History (ref: 1086)

Following the appointment of Professor Edith Hall, Leverhulme Professor of Greek Cultural History, to a research chair in London from July 2006, the Department wishes to appoint a replacement in the broad area of Greek Cultural History: see further below. (This appointment is made possible by a generous, ten-year grant from The Leverhulme Trust which will run until 2011; the post itself is permanent.) The Department also wishes to make a further professorial appointment in anticipation of the retirement, within the next four years, of one of its other senior members. The two appointments together signal the Department's determination to continue to improve its standing in the field of Classics, both in terms of research and in terms of its teaching at both undergraduate and graduate level. An allowance for research expenses will be attached to the first post (but not to the second) until 2011.

'Greek Cultural History', and indeed 'Latin Cultural History', should be understood as encompassing the study of material (and visual) culture as well as the study of ancient society, language, literature, and thought. The Department is also seeking to increase its strength in certain special fields, especially in literature and in theoretical approaches to culture in the widest sense, as well as in Greek and Latin linguistics together with the theory and practice of the teaching of ancient languages. In the broadest terms, the Department will expect to appoint individuals of the highest quality in the field or fields that will best complement its existing strengths; and it warmly invites applications on that basis. However applicants for both positions should be qualified and willing to contribute to the teaching of the ancient languages that underpins the Department's mission.

Further details of the posts and application forms are available on our website http://www.dur.ac.uk/jobs/. The closing date for both positions is January 16, 2006.

Potential applicants are also welcome to contact either Professor Christopher Rowe at c.j.rowe@dur.ac.uk or Professor Edward Harris at Edward.harris@dur.ac.uk
