THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE – OLYMPIA, WA
The Evergreen State College seeks a faculty member in Classical Studies whose research and teaching focus on one or more of the following fields: literature, history, philosophy, art history and/or archaeology. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching about Greek and Roman cultures within the broader Mediterranean world. We especially encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching focuses on the relationships between Greece and Rome and the ancient civilizations of Africa and Asia. Candidates must be able to teach Greek or Latin, preferably both. Because we are interested in the ways in which knowledge of the past can illuminate the present, we are also seeking candidates with serious research and teaching interests in themes and questions applicable to 21st century questions of global citizenship, with its historical continuities and cultural variations. Such themes could include the meaning of citizenship and democracy, humanity's relationship to the natural world, the relationship between the secular and the spiritual, or the problematic features of empire and colonialism. We would very much value in a colleague the ability to engage these questions in a comparative framework and to do so with consideration of modern texts and issues.

Team teaching is fundamental to the work of faculty members at Evergreen. Faculty members on teaching teams have a significant amount of direct contact with students and enjoy a high degree of freedom to determine the subject matter, pace, emphasis, classroom strategies and modes of evaluation in the programs that they teach. Candidates who have background and interests beyond the humanities and have prior experience teaching with faculty from other disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. We also encourage applicants who have had experience teaching and/or working with students from underrepresented populations, and who prioritize inspiring a diverse range of students to study Classics.
