The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University announces an open-rank search for an advanced tenure-track faculty member or a tenured professor in the field of Egyptology. The aim of this interdisciplinary search is to appoint an outstanding scholar whose research and teaching will complement the University's current coverage of the civilizations of the ancient world, with a focus on the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. Applicants should be conversant with the art, archaeology, culture, and history of ancient Egypt, preferably in the third and second millennium BCE, and should also know ancient Egyptian, although it is not anticipated that the appointee will offer language instruction. The departmental affiliation of the appointee will be determined in light of his or her research and teaching program. A Ph.D. or equivalent and a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching are expected. Teaching duties will include courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department of the Classics seeks applications for a Preceptor in Modern Greek beginning September 2008. The position is renewable on a yearly basis for up to eight years, based on performance and curricular need. The finalist will be responsible for offering four language classes a year and undertaking administrative responsibilities in the Program of Modern Greek Studies.

Applicants should be well versed in the issues of teaching Modern Greek as a foreign language, have experience in teaching all levels of the language, have native or near native proficiency in Modern Greek, and must be able to conduct upper level courses in Modern Greek. Specialization in modern Greek literature, linguistics and culture, or Greek intellectual history and in teaching modern Greek as second language is highly desirable. A strong doctoral record is preferred.
