The Department of Classics at Howard University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher, beginning August 2013. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses in translation and in Greek and Latin at all levels, the candidate should specialize in one of the following: (1) The Classical Tradition: the successful candidate will be responsible for reviving Frank M. Snowden’s course, “Blacks in Antiquity, ” and for offering courses on the classical tradition in African-American culture. (2) Material Culture: the candidate should be able to offer courses on the art and archaeology of Greece and Rome in all periods, as well as on Hellenistic and Roman Egypt/North Africa; evidence of an ability to cover the Ancient Near East is especially welcome. Ph.D. required at the time of application. Candidates must be fully committed to undergraduate teaching and show evidence of research appropriate to their level of experience. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to curricular development and to the department’s on-going efforts to attract new majors.
