MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY (2 Positions) -- UPPER MONTCLAIR, NJ

  1. The Department of Classics and General Humanities will appoint a tenure-track assistant professor to direct the University's Center for Archaeological Studies and to teach in the General Humanities program, to begin Sept. 1, 2000. The Center, an interdisciplinary research and educational institute reporting to the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, ties together archaeologically-related activities of four academic departments (Anthropology, Classics & General Humanities, Earth & Environmental Studies, Art History) and serves as the University's vehicle for delivering a wide range of educational experiences, such as field schools and workshops, to MSU students, to students and teachers in New Jersey schools, and to the public. The Director is expected to promote student research and preparation for graduate study, including assisting with placement in appropriate field experiences; to carry on an active field program that will act as a vehicle for student education; to engage in grant writing and other fundraising on the Center's behalf; and to develop a publication series. The successful candidate must have a completed Ph.D. in archaeology or an allied field (area of specialization open, but he or she should be able to teach in the academic programs of at least two of the four departments named above); at least two years of full-time teaching experience; a well-developed program of scholarly research; and an interdisciplinary background which includes both anthropological and "classical" perspectives on archaeology as well as the broader intellectual ties between archaeology and other humanities and social science disciplines.
