The Department of Art & Design and the Department of Classics & General Humanities at Montclair State University will hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor, effective September 1, 2003, with special competence in classical art and archaeology and in the classical humanistic tradition in Western culture. Strength in interdisciplinary humanities teaching and research is essential. We especially welcome candidates whose theoretical and methodological perspectives on the humanities and on archaeological studies are broad, and who have active field projects or promise of developing such projects in association with the University's Center for Archaeological Studies. The teaching load will include substantial coursework in the general education program (courses such as survey of art in ancient and medieval civilization, ancient-medieval Western Humanities survey, mythology, introduction to classical archaeology, ancient civilization) as well as more focused undergraduate courses and graduate courses (areas of projected need are Aegean art & archaeology, the art & archaeology of Western Asia, and the political and cultural uses of the classical past in modern times). The successful candidate should be able to interact extensively and productively with such non-university entities as the public schools, museums, and nonprofit organizations for the purpose of developing outreach programs and student internships. He or she will have the opportunity to contribute teaching and curriculum development in growing undergraduate programs in Classics, General Humanities, art history, and archaeology; in the University Honors Program; in an existing M.A. in art history; and in a projected M.A. in humanities. Applicants should hold the Ph.D. in art history and archaeology, art history, or classical studies, or an equivalent Ph.D., and have at least two years of college-level teaching experience including the teaching of texts as well as visual material.
