MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY – UPPER MONTCLAIR, NJ (Two Positions)
POSITION ONE: Montclair State University plans to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Classics to begin September 1, 2006. The successful candidate must be able to fulfill two specific roles in an expanding department: (1) teach Mythology, the department's most popular undergraduate course, which serves the undergraduate general education requirement, and contribute to the enhancement of the mythology curriculum; (2) contribute significantly to a growing undergraduate and postgraduate Latin teacher education program, including such activities as teaching a Latin instructional methods course, recruiting students, observing student teachers, interfacing with accrediting bodies, and promoting job placement in the schools.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a closely related field. Teaching experience. Developing record of scholarly research and publication appropriate for eventual tenure. Expertise in mythology as evidenced by training, scholarly activity, and/or teaching experience. As many as possible of the following: training in second language acquisition, secondary or middle school teaching experience, experience in working with organizations involved with secondary level education.

POSITION TWO: Montclair State University plans to hire an experienced New World archaeologist as an Associate Professor of Anthropology. This person will work closely with MSU’s interdepartmental Center for Archaeological Studies and with associated disciplines--especially Classics, but also Art History and Earth & Environmental Studies--and should be able to work collaboratively with off-campus programs as well. The ideal candidate should have the potential to take a leadership role in the Center. He or she should possess strong interdisciplinary perspectives and a record of incorporating theory into fieldwork, teaching, and practice, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the classroom and the field. His or her main expertise should be in North American Archaeology; a secondary area in one of the following is desirable: the archaeology of the Northeastern U.S., CRM/Public Archeology; archaeological theory. Candidates are expected to participate in curriculum development and review for the Archaeology and Anthropology programs.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field. Minimum 5 years of full-time teaching experience, substantial publication record, active leadership in project development and obtaining funding.
