Field Director, Excavations At Aphrodisias, and Assistant Professor of Art History - Faculty of Arts and Science.

The Institute of Fine Arts and Department of Art History at New York University jointly seek a Field Director for its Excavations at Aphrodisias who will also serve as a faculty member in the history of ancient Greek or Roman art. The position will be at the Assistant Professor level, tenure track, beginning September 1, 2007, pending administrative and budgetary approval.

The Field Director will spend each summer excavation season at Aphrodisias, plan and supervise a scientific program of field work and excavation at the site, supervise student training in archaeological practice, manage the Aphrodisias excavation office at the Institute of Fine Arts, and supervise the permit application process and recruitment of student participants in the dig. The Field Director will work with the Excavation Director, the Director of the Institute of Fine Arts, the Deputy Director for Sculpture, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to supervise the publications program and to raise funds for the project. During the academic year, the Field Director/Assistant Professor will teach two undergraduate courses in the Department of Art History and one graduate course at the Institute of Fine Arts. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in art history and/or archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean world, extensive excavation experience, a strong teaching portfolio, and a substantial record of research and publication. Excavation management expertise, fluency in Turkish, experience with archaeological administration in Turkey, and a fundraising record are highly desirable. Breadth of scholarly interest in art history and study of the ancient Mediterranean world and Asia Minor, and knowledge of ancient sculpture and architecture are preferred.
