The Department of Classics at Northwestern University seeks applications for one or more Mellon Post-doctoral Fellows. The area of specialization is open. The appointment is from September 2002, for a period of two years. The PhD must be completed by the start date.

We are seeking candidates with ambitious research interests and strong teaching abilities. Mellon Fellows are assigned two quarter-long courses per year, one of which will be a seminar. Fellows are expected to attend departmental colloquia, and to present one colloquium each year. They will also be members of Northwestern's Classical Traditions Initiative, a broad based humanities project comprising the interests of about twenty-five faculty members in various departments. POSITION ONE & TWO: The Department of Classics of Northwestern University invites applications for two full-time positions. The rank of both positions is open: tenure-track or tenured associate or full. We seek two colleagues demonstrating outstanding scholarly abilities, broad and innovative intellectual interests, and a commitment to excellent teaching. For one of these positions, candidates should have strong research interests in ancient philosophy, with a broader Classical orientation (which might for example include tragedy, rhetoric, cultural history). The area of the second position is open, although applications are encouraged in the areas of Latin and Roman history or culture. (Archaeologists/art historians should direct applications to Northwestern's Department of Art History: see below.) In addition to full membership in the Department of Classics, the successful candidates will participate in a multi-disciplinary initiative to expand Northwestern's program in the literary, philosophical and cultural traditions of the Classical world at both graduate and undergraduate levels, with faculty contributions from the Departments of Classics, Philosophy, Political Science, Art History, Law, German, English, and Religion. POSITION THREE: The Department of Art History of Northwestern University seeks to make a full-time appointment (rank open) in the art and/or architecture of the ancient Mediterranean world, commencing Fall 2002. S/he will teach and advise at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will participate in a campus-wide multi-disciplinary initiative in the literary, philosophical and cultural traditions of the classical world. Ph.D. and a record of publications and teaching commensurate with the applicant's potential rank are expected. Applications from minority scholars are especially welcome. In addition to full membership in the Philosophy Department, the successful candidate will participate in a multi-disciplinary initiative to expand Northwestern's program in the literary, philosophical and cultural traditions of the classical world at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
