The Classics Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, beginning fall semester of 2009 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach a total of five courses in Classical Civilization and Classical Languages and Literature. The candidate will offer an introductory course in Roman History, as well as a more specialized course in Classical Civilization of his/her own design. S/he will also teach at the beginning and advanced level in our ancient languages sequences. The ability to teach Latin is required; preference will be given to candidates able to teach Greek as well. Special expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: Roman social or political history; Latin prose; Greek or Roman archaeology; modern critical theory.

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2009-10. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The Department of Classics has four full-time faculty and teaches a wide range of course in Classical civilization, including Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, and ancient archaeology.
