The Classics Department at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment will be for one semester beginning first semester, 2006-07, as Visiting Assistant Professor or Visiting Instructor, depending on qualifications.

The incumbent will teach courses in the general areas of Latin language and literature and Classical Civilization. The course load will be three courses, consisting of Elementary Latin, an advanced course in Latin literature, and a general course in Classical Civilization of the successful applicant's design and choice.

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree in hand or ABD. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The Department of Classics has four full-time faculty and teaches the wide range of courses in Classical Civilization, including Greek and Roman literature, ancient history, and mythology, as well as four years each of Latin and Greek. Oberlin College seeks a Classicist able to teach in the general area of Greek and Roman history, with a special emphasis on social history. This is a full-time, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor or higher, beginning in the academic year 2006-07. Requirements: Ph.D. degree in Classics or a Ph.D. in History with strong competence in both Greek and Latin (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2006-2007). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Some preference will be given to specialists in Roman History over Greek. Special expertise in one or more of the following fields is also desirable: history of the Hellenistic period; the Roman imperial provinces; late Antiquity. Familiarity with historical theory and cultural critique is also desirable.
